Appearance:
Hisoka has blonde hair and striking green eyes. His looks and slenderness have given others cause to think him “as pretty as a girl”, although he’s heard this phrase enough times to be sick of it. He does nothing to provoke the comments, opting to dress in baggy clothing; often quite covering in order to minimise contact with others, and to hide a bizarre set of markings that seem to appear and disappear of their own accord. Although he would prefer others not to see these – uncertain himself of their origin – there are situations which call for lighter clothing; although he won’t resort to sleeveless shirts unless it is really too hot to wear anything else. He has never paid any mind to fashion; partly because of his general isolation from society; and partly because a pair of female co-workers attempted to, on several occasions, force him into a dress. He chooses function and comfort over fashion; favouring a pair of old-style jeans above everything else in his wardrobe.
Personality
Although Hisoka is often a quiet individual who tends to keep himself to himself, he has come to understand that to do so completely would be a complete impossibility, and so endeavours to maintain a calm, polite and civil exterior – outwardly controlled even when he is inwardly rattled. However, he does not suffer fools gladly – tending to lose his patience with others, even if their foolishness is a part of their personality. He is a hard-worker and takes things seriously.

He is reluctant to open up to others as his trust has been betrayed many times. However, to those who know him better and whom he trusts, Hisoka is a valuable friend and fiercely loyal – he will literally fight and die, if need be, for those he loves. However, he often has trouble knowing what he feels, as he so frequently experiences the feelings of others.
Abilities/Weaponry:
Hisoka’s magical abilities stem from his empathy – an ability he has had since an early age. He is able to feel others’ emotions and traces of them in objects they have recently touched. However, he has difficulty in controlling this ability, especially as it is amplified by touch, and the transfer of strong emotions can induce physical reactions – breathing difficulties, nausea, pain, weakness and unconsciousness the most common of these. However, it is possible to establish a link through exchange of emotions. He has very little experience of this ‘Synchronisation’ process, but it appears to be the end product of his initial empathic abilities.

Abilities to heal and to shield are secondary to Hisoka’s empathy – he knows even less about these, and his use of them is mostly instinctive. Although he is able to shield himself and others, he suspects that his healing abilities do not extend to himself; and the last time he attempted to heal anyone else resulted in an overload of emotion and, subsequently, a fainting fit. Although the wound itself was taken care of, he vowed never to try to heal a paper cut again.

Hisoka possesses a sharp mind and, as part of his upbringing, was schooled in various samurai disciplines including martial arts, swordplay and archery – which he picked up again and practised after he left home.
Weaknesses:
Hisoka is the type to never admit weakness, and so would continue striving onward until his body packs in on him – as it is inclined to, as his health isn’t particularly good in the first place. He trouble with extremes of temperature, particularly heat, which tends to cause him to faint – especially when coupled with his regular bouts of insomnia due to experiencing other peoples’ nightmares. Not to mention his own. Although his tenacity makes up for his lack of strength, it is also likely to get him more seriously injured; and his aversion to touch means he is less likely to accept help, even when he needs it.
History:
“I come from a small village in Japan; born of a line that can trace its history back sixteen generations. They’re pretty proud of the fact. Sadly I, the only hope for the seventeenth generation, was a complete failure. To begin with, I wasn’t the first-born: I had a sister – born two years before me – but she was killed because my family is far too superstitious. My father loved her, but never me.

“I was always extremely… sensitive to the emotions of others. So even if my family had cared to try to hide their hate of me, it wouldn’t have made much difference. I was a monster: frightening. My “curse” meant that I was locked in a cell below the house. If I was lucky I’d be let out at night. When I was thirteen I had an… encounter with a trespasser and was found the following morning unconscious and covered in my own blood. My family feared the worst; I was confined to the cell completely, and became ill.

“The sickness remained undiagnosed. Even after a year had passed, the family continued to believe that I had been attacked by a demon – a set of markings across my torso serving as “proof”. They came up with a myriad of explanations for the excruciating pains that attacked my body but did nothing to help me.

“I resolved to leave. It didn’t matter when, or how, or why, but I had to leave. As soon as my health showed some small sign of improvement I gathered what little I had and broke out with the help of a stolen key. I never looked back.

“I had considered using an alias, but it became clear that my family was quite unknown outside of our village – and they did not expect me to get far away from home in the first place. I made my way to Tokyo and spent the following two years of my life working – the details of which I’ll spare you. Although my job involved a good deal of paperwork, it also gave me a chance to learn more about my abilities – my empathy - in a crowded office with two superiors, three morons, various other co-workers and an owl. Although my health had gradually started to pick up since I left home, I can’t say my sanity faired as well.

“I made no secret of my decision to move to Allupato and, much to my chagrin, the entire office showed up to see me off. We’d gone through quite a lot together in those two years so I can’t say I was overjoyed to leave a place I felt, for the first time, that I belonged to… but it had always been my intention to work long enough – to get enough money to move away. I never deluded myself about that and I think I chose the right time to go.”
